One of the intentions in the new Flemish Coalition Agreement 2024-2029 is to make the recognition of foreign study certificates more efficient. SERV fully supports this decision and brought together The Advisory Committee on Economic Migration and the Diversity Committee to formulate 10 recommendations to make the recognition of foreign diplomas smoother this legislature in order to make the labour market more inclusive, address shortages and mismatches and promote sustainable careers. Today, overqualification for the job people perform is twice as high for highly skilled newcomers with a foreign diploma (2/5) compared to highly skilled newcomers with a Flemish diploma (1/5). NARIC-Flanders is responsible for the academic recognition of foreign study certificates for employment purposes. Long processing times have been a problem for years.
