The rich Sufi musical tradition has been transmitted orally in Aleppo for decades. JAWA’s mission is to preserve this heritage, which is threatened by the war in Syria. The Sufi masters, guardians of the secrets of this musical tradition, are gradually disappearing from the scene, threatening to lose forever a treasure trove of songs.
De Centrale proposes “Last breath from Aleppo” from the group JAWA, who will present traditional musical pieces with its personal perspective and vision, while preserving the classic way of interpreting the muwashahat soufis, with its complex rhythms and oriental maqams.
Guardians of this rich cultural heritage, JAWA brings this music to life in a contemporary way. It is a project of preservation, but also of resistance. They refuse to see a tradition gradually disappear without trying to save it themselves.
